Introduction

The World Young Aerosol Scientist Award (WYASA) aims to:

1) Identify and Recognition: Young scholars who have made breakthroughs in basic theory, observation technology, numerical simulation, health effects, climate impact, and engineering management in the filed of aerosols are selected from around the world.

2) Catalyze collaboration: Through international reviews, global releases, and special seminars, we facilitate in-depth connections between young award winners and top laboratories, companies, and decision-making bodies.

3) Promote equity: Give priority to outstanding young people from developing countries, women and disadvantaged groups, narrow the gap in scientific research resources, and achieve a more inclusive scientific community.

4) Serve society: guiding young scientists to focus on pressing social issues such as urban air quality, extreme wildfire aerosols, and bioaerosol transmission, promoting the implementation of research results, and improving public welfare.

Award Rules

Prize for the Award

The award is presented every two years and consists of:

1) A maximum of three official awardees per award round. Each winner will receive a prize of US$ 2,000 and a certificate.

2) Up to five additional awardees will receive certificates with “Honorary Mentions”.

The prize is provided by the WYASA Foundation, which is co-funded by the Chinese Association of Aerosol Science and Technology and TSI Inc. USA. A special fund has been established to ensure the prize’s long-term sustainability.

Selection Processes

1) Nominee

The nominees are outstanding scholars aged 40 or under from around the world in aerosol sciences/engineering. The age limit for female scholars can be extended to under 42 years old.

2) Nomination

Nominator qualifications: IARA Board Members, IARA Fellows, past WYASA winners, members of national academies of sciences/engineering, etc. Each nominator may nominate one candidate per year.

3) Qualification review

The WYASA Secretariat (located at the Chinese Association of Aerosol Science and Technology) will conduct a formal review and eliminate candidates who are over the age limit, have submitted duplicate applications or have submitted incomplete materials.

4) International Review

The judging panel consists of five people: three senior scientists from different continents, one previous winner, and one technical executive from the industry.

5) Awards and follow-up support

An award ceremony will be held ahead of the closing ceremony of each International Aerosol Conference or alternatively at the American, European, or Asian Aerosol Conference. The Secretariat will track achievements over the following year and create the ‘WYASA Young Scientist Open Database’ on the IARA website. This database will share data and code in an open-access format, thereby continuously expanding the influence of the award.
